Physical assault

During the 2017–18 reference period, an estimated 3.1% of persons in Queensland (121,000) experienced physical assault, which was higher than the national victimisation rate (2.4%). Of these:

  • three in five (60% or 72,400) had the most recent incident reported to police
  • approximately half (52% or 58,000) believed alcohol or any other substance contributed to the most recent incident.

Just under half experienced a single incident (49% or 58,900) and 26% (30,800) experienced three or more incidents.

Threatened assault

An estimated 2.8% of persons in Queensland (109,400) experienced threatened assault in the 12 months prior to the interview, including:
  • 2.4% (94,500) who experienced face-to-face threatened assault
  • 1.0% (25,800) who experienced non face-to-face threatened assault.

Approximately two in five persons who experienced threatened assault in Queensland (39% or 42,600) experienced a single incident, while 38% (41,400) experienced three or more incidents.

Of those who experienced face-to-face threatened assault:
  • more than two in five (43% or 40,900) had their most recent incident reported to police
  • half (50% or 42,500) believed alcohol or any other substance contributed to the most recent incident.

Break-in and attempted break-in

During the 2017–18 reference period, 2.5% of households in Queensland (47,600) experienced a break-in. Of these, 74% (35,100) had the most recent incident reported to police.

During the same period, an estimated 2.5% of households in Queensland (46,900) experienced an attempted break-in. Of these, 44% (20,500) had the most recent incident reported to police.

Theft from a motor vehicle

An estimated 2.0% of households in Queensland (37,100) experienced theft from a motor vehicle, which was lower than the national rate (3.1%). Of these households, 61% (22,700) had the most recent incident reported to police.

Malicious property damage

In Queensland, an estimated 4.4% of households (83,100) experienced malicious property damage, which was lower than the national rate (5.1%).Of these households, half (53% or 43,600) had the most recent incident reported to police.
